AMU VC urged to name centenary gate after Sardar Patel or Ambedkar or Ashfaqullah Khan

AGRA: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) student Ajay Singh, also a grandson of BJP MLA Dalveer Singh, has urged the vice-chancellor to name the newly-built centenary gate at the university either after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel or Dr BR Ambedkar or Ashfaqulla Khan.

In a letter to vice-chancellor Prof Tariq Mansoor, Singh said in the larger interest, name the newly-built gate at Purani Chungi entrance after great freedom fighters and revolutionaries — Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel or Dr BR Ambedkar or Ashfaqullah Khan — considering their contributions to the freedom struggle and consolidation of “our” nation after the independence.

“Moreover, there should also be a signboard beside the gate mentioning the names of freedom fighters, who fought valiantly for our independence, and brave soldiers, who sacrificed their lives for the country, as a tribute to them,” the letter reads.

Such a move would help youngsters and future generations to have a larger outlook towards life that would, in turn, help the nation and the university in the long run, he stated.

To make the centenary year memorable, the university has decided to construct a Centenary Gate at its Purani Chungi entrance on the pattern of Bab-e-Syed. The gate is still under construction and will be completed soon, said officials.
