Which courses are being offered for Programming and Data Science?
IIT Madras offers online programmes for the following courses — Diploma in Programming, Diploma in Data Science, and BSc Degree in Programming and Data Science.
When will the application process for IIT Madras Data Science begin?
The starting date of the application process will be announced shortly. Tentatively, the last date to apply for IIT Madras Data Science programme will be September 15, 2020.
Does a candidate need to qualify JEE to pursue this course?
No. Candidates need not to appear for JEE to pursue Programming and Data Science courses offered by IIT Madras. Even the current batch of students who are completing their class 12 in 2020 or who are currently enrolled in a different on-campus programme anywhere in India can apply for this programme. Graduates and working professionals can also take up this programme.
Who can join the IIT Madras Data Science programme?
Candidates who are currently in college can pursue this course as a second degree. Anyone who has dropped out of or completed their Bachelor’s Degree can also apply for this course.
Is there any age restriction to pursue this course?
Candidates should note that there is no age or stream or geographical restrictions to pursue Programming and Data Science courses offered by IIT Madras.
How can I apply?
Once the application process begins, eligible candidates can apply by filling in the application form through the online portal — onlinedegree.iitm.ac.in. Further details regarding application form and required documents will be made available soon.
How much is the application fee?
Candidates would need to pay an application fee of Rs 3000. The fee includes the fee for the qualifier process content and qualifier exam.
What is the fee structure?
Fee structure for each term depends on the Course Level that the learner has registered for and the course credits. The fee per credit for Foundational Level courses will be Rs 1000. The fee per credit for Diploma / Degree Level courses will be Rs 2500.
Candidates who belong to Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories are eligible for a 50% fee waiver. Persons with Disabilities (PwD >= 40% disability). There’s a 75% fee waiver if a learner is both PwD >=40% AND belongs to the SC / ST category.
Fee to repeat an entire course is the same as the full course fee. Fee to only repeat the end term exam is Rs 1000 for foundational level courses and Rs 2000 for diploma / degree level courses

The fee structure described in the table above applies to the case when a learner successfully clears / passes each course in one attempt. Every time a learner does not pass a course, the fee for that course will need to be paid again while re-registering for it as per norms given in the section Learners who do not pass a course.
Are these official Diplomas and Degree of IIT Madras?
Yes. IIT Madras senate approves and offers the Diploma(s) and Degree in Programming and Data Science. Candidates who complete these courses become alumni of IIT Madras.
What is the Qualifier Process?
Candidates need to complete four weeks of online courses and assignments. The candidate who gets minimum required scores in weekly assignments in the four weeks will be eligible to write Qualifier exam broadly based on the four weeks of content.
Students who score minimum required marks in Qualifier Exam get to register for Foundational Level courses.
What is the Structure of the Program?
The program is divided into three levels that has to be completed strictly in sequence — Foundational Level (8 courses), Diploma Level (6 Programming courses + 6 Data Science courses), and Degree Level (11 courses).
